Description
SOLID OAK GRAMOPHONE FOR SALETHIS ONE HAS US STUMPED. MY FRIENDS AND I ARE LIFELONG COLLECTORS AND WE HAVE NEVER SEEN THE LIKES OF THIS BEFORE. IT'S A BEAUTIFUL SOLID OAK GRAMOPHONE WITH UNIDENTIFIED PARTS --- EXCEPT FOR THE TONE ARM WHICH IS COLUMBIA. AND HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A LEFT-SIDED CRANK? WELL .... YOU HAVE NOW.
THIS ENORMOUS UNIT MUST WEIGHT 250 to 300 lbs. IT IS MASSIVE AND BEAUTIFULLY CONSTRUCTED. HOWEVER, UPON CAREFUL EXAMINATION --- IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THIS IS NOT A FACTORY MADE UNIT.
SIZE OF THE GRAMOPHONE IS 49" HIGH .... BY 25" DEEP AND 24" WIDE.
THE FOUR FRONT DOOR PANELS ARE MIRRORED MUSIC NOTES ON THE TOP AND LYRE ON THE BOTTOM. THEY ARE IN GOOD CONDITION WITH ONLY A SMALL BIT OF "ALLIGATORING" --- MOST NOTICEABLE ON THE TOP LEFT UNIT.
THERE ARE THREE PROBLEMS WITH THIS UNIT:
FIRST ---
T
here is a problem with the governor. The motor works -- in fact it is probably good for 5 plays on one cranking. However, the governor does not engage properly and consequently, the turntable turns at about 300 rpm.
SECOND ---
The unit is missing the back wood panel ... although there is a chance the dealer who sold this unit to me will be able to find it in the near future.
THRID ---
The Columbia tone arm is frozen in all it's joint. I have the joints soaking with Silicroil ... but it may be necessary to put a new tone arm on this unit. I have my doubt that this Columbia tone arm was a factory item because it only uses one screw holding it to the motorboard.
IF ANY OF YOU HAVE EVER SEEN A UNIT LIKE THIS FOR SALE AND CAN TELL US MORE ABOUT IT ... WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU. UNTIL SUCH TIME, WE BELIEVE THIS TO BE A ONE-OF-A-KIND GRAMOPHONE.
