HELMS BAKERY Disneyland Band 1956 Vesey Walker Postcard A-8 Town Square Flagpole
HELMS BAKERY Disneyland Band 1956 Vesey Walker Postcard A-8 Town Square Flagpole
Historic Disneyland Auctions by Saturday's Toys presents...
an historic keepsake collectible from Disneyland's earliest years...
as mailed in 1958 to the 11-acre headquarters of the famed Helms Bakery
on Venice Blvd in Los Angeles.
The card was first sold at Disneyland in 1956 with the early "Disneyland Inc." copyright mark... indicating Walt Disney's ownership interest in the company that represented the use of his name throughout Disneyland.  Throughout the early 1960's, that was a point of contention between Walt Disney Productions and the company's founder... until the two parties came to a new agreement allowing for Walt's ownership of WED Enterprises and RETLAW to control his personal interests in the development of theme park attractions and other investments under his own name.  Eventually, many of those assets were sold to the company after Walt's passing.
Features the Disneyland Band and famed conductor Col. Vesey Walker on historic Disneyland postcard A-8... among the second year postcards that were issued and sold for several years afterward...  Here, the talented Disneyland Band provides musical accompaniment as the nation's flag is lowered for the day.
The inscription reads: "Bob - Mary Edna & Mandy still going strong.  Harold C."  The card was then mailed to the Cake Donuts Department at Helms Bakery (at the corner of Helms and Venice Blvd in Los Angeles).  While Helms closed its doors forever in the late 1960's (due to the expanding prominence of local supermarket grocery stores)... children of the 1950's will always remember the Helms Bakery man as he made his rounds in neighborhoods throughout Southern California.  Once the yellow coaches pulled to the curb, the driver would open the back doors of the truck and reveal the sliding wooden drawers that contained the freshest donuts and baked goods that we could imagine.  Fresh donuts... delivered to our house!!  Those were the days...
Postmarked from Anaheim, California on July 19, 1958.  Still features the two cent stamp honoring Founding Father and the third President of the United States... Thomas Jefferson.
Of particular note, Col. Walker stands in front of the dedication plaque that Walt Disney read on live coast-to-coast television when he dedicated Disneyland on July 17, 1955.
Nicely preserved for nearly seven decades.  Good condition with slight darkening of lower right corner on back of postcard.
A rare first-generation souvenir from Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

    Saturday’s Toys and Disneyana Auctions
was founded in 1994 by Southern California author and Disney historian, Dave Mason. Soon after eBay's launch the following year, Saturday's Toys was among the first Disneyana specialists to strategize in embracing this rapidly developing technology. Having delivered over 10,000 coveted Disney treasures since then, Saturday's Toys is pleased to partner with researchers, collectors and friends throughout the world with a shared interest in the preservation of authentic and accurate Disney history.
Today, online offerings of archival Disneyana keepsakes are presented in celebration of the extended times that allow for family, friends and neighbors to join in memorable gatherings that nurture the strong connections that bind a community together. These treasures are affectionately known as "Saturday's Toys." In that light we present our adopted motto (with a tip of the cap to the Sherman Brothers):
"Oh, let's go fly a kite!"
