Disneyland 1966 Photo Essay RAMPARTS Magazine Ronald Reagan Lenny Bruce Obituary
Disneyland 1966 Photo Essay RAMPARTS Magazine Ronald Reagan Lenny Bruce Obituary
Historic Disneyland Memorabilia from Saturday's Toys presents...
a unique liberal magazine that used original photographs of Disneyland (by photographer and artist Bill Tara) to illustrate their essays and articles about the 1966 political climate in California.
Features Mickey Mouse on the magazine's cover:  "Golly gee, California is a strange state!"  The magazine covers the coming evolution of California politics as the term Governor Pat Brown (father of future governor Jerry Brown) comes to an end... heralding the election of Ronald Reagan as the state's governor on November 8, 1966.
The magazine's art director, Dugald Stermer, shaped the October 1966 issue of "Ramparts" to contrast the juxtaposition between traditional politics and populist movements as the state careened away from liberal politics for the first time in recent memory (an unthinkable prospect for this San Francisco magazine).
The magazine's Opinion page outlines "The Birth of Black Power" and provides a framework for rejecting nonviolent protest in these final months in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King.  While the magazine would have its own critics in 1966, the same words could summarize today's BLM movement in America.
In presenting the essay by the magazine's editors, the art director uses several original photos captured at Disneyland by Los Angeles based illustrator and photographer Bill Tara (1916 - 1973).
    Quoting mid-century illustrator Harry Borgman,
"Bill Tara was hired by Campbell Ewald Creative Director Jim Hastings as a freelance idea man, and he was very good at it. I worked with him a lot of the time that I was at CE, from 1956 to 1960. I frequently went out to LA on Chevrolet photo assignments, working with photographer Todd Walker."
The original Disneyland photos used in the essay included:
The Mad Hatter at King Arthur Carrousel
New Orleans Square shoeshine boy exiting from backstage at Disneyland
Security Officer in "Keystone Kops" style of uniform; in front of Disneyland City Hall
"Uncle Sam" mechanical game in Penny Arcade
Outlaw bandit about to be hung outside the Golden Horseshoe Saloon before a gathering crowd of Disneyland guests
It's a Small World facade with the Santa Fe and Disneyland Railroad passing by; pulled by the Fred Gurley train engine.
Mickey Mouse at the Town Square branch for Bank of America
Also includes "Obituaries on Lenny Bruce" by Ralph J. Gleason and Paul Krassner.  The comedian, social critic and satirist (aka Leonard Schneider) had died in his Hollywood Hills home on August 3, 1966.  Five pages; an insightful overview of the comedian's controversial career.
Also features an additional black and white photo essay using stills from the movie career of Ronald Reagan; soon to be elected as Governor of California... and eventually as President of the United States.
Includes "The California Natural History Guidebook" featuring art from illustrator Gene Holtan (1930 - 2016).
60 pages; plus cover.  Good condition with wear noted to cover, as was typical of this particular issue as it was printed with a black background.
