Vintage "I'm Fer Elmer" pinback for Elmer J. Hoffman (1899-1976), a Republican elected Illinois state treasurer in 1952 and 1956 and member of Congress from 1959 to 1965.According to the Busy Beaver Button Museum, although he used the slogan, "I'm Fer Elmer" for all of his campaigns, this pin was probably used in his later congressional campaigns. Its website also notes that Hoffman, a life-long resident of Wheaton, a western suburb of Chicago, objected when in 1967, a man named Elmer Johnson ran for Wheaton mayor, using the same slogan. Hoffman spoke publicly against its use.
